Vmail Inc. discovered the need for a low cost long distance messaging solution between international locations where a large amount of immigration/emigration existed. The first test market was Toronto to Philippines. Toronto has a large Philippino community and they were spending a large percentage of their income on long distance back home to friends and family. ViaComp was selected as the technology partner and was contracted to provide all design, development, and network infrastructure services. The plan was to offer, for a low monthly fee, the ability for subscribers to send an unlimited number of messsages to anyone living in the Philippines. And, anyone in the Philippines, with the use of a subscriber's PIN, could send messages back home. Using the Internet as a backbone, we compressed and transmitted voicefiles from Toronto to the Philippines (and vice versa). When the voicefile arrived at its destination, our local server placed an outbound call (for free) to the recipient of the message and allowed them to listen to it. An option to send a free reply was also available. For the cost of a couple of servers, a couple of local phone lines and an Internet connection in each location, we can handle tens of thousands of messages per month. The product did have some good success and we were planning to deploy in some other locations - but then long distance rates dropped, and our market more-or-less vanished overnight. We did re-work parts of the product and it was sold off to International TeleData Group to provide automated delivery of voice advertisements by phone. It is still used to this day to deliver notices to season ticket holders for the Toronto Blue Jays, Raptors, and several other sporting franchises.
